The location of the motor partly determines the level of performance of the bike.

The front hub electric bike motor

Front hub motors are the most widely used in conversion kits. They are generally the cheapest but also the simplest to install. However, this type of motor must be mounted on a rigid fork, as a suspension fork may not be strong enough to withstand the front pull. For balance, an e-bike with an electric motor on the front wheel should preferably be used on flat ground and simple routes.

Rear hub electric bike motor

Fitting a rear hub motor is more complex because it requires adjusting the derailleur to avoid the risk of wheel slip. Also, this type of motor makes it harder to remove the rear wheel in case of a puncture, since the wires connecting the motor to the battery must be unplugged. However, rear hub motors are best suited to urban travel. They offer a certain quick-start ability, needed to get out of junctions, roundabouts and traffic lights.

Crank drive electric bike motor

Crank drive motors are the most efficient and certainly the most expensive. They offer better efficiency and good bike velocity, letting you cross slopes and face headwind with ease. Fitted between the two pedals, this type of motor acts directly on the chain without cluttering the wheels, guaranteeing better weight balance. Also, thanks to their position, crank drive motors are better protected from impacts. Today, crank drive kits for e-bikes are increasingly easy to install.

The motor of an electric bike can be fitted in the centre of the front or rear wheel (the hub) or between the pedals.
