I am thirty-five, I rode a lot throughout my childhood and my last mount was forgotten in a student friend’s garage roughly fifteen years ago. Having lived for a year in a more countrified neighbourhood, I wanted to get back into it. But besides being countrified, this neighbourhood is above all a well-hilled colline. You get the chill on the descents, but the flames of hell on the climbs. And I can tell you there are many, enough for this idea to go back to the bottom of the pile. But that was before. Because since, I discovered the e-bike!
\nAfter a discussion with a friend user of an electric bike, I typed all the keywords on google: electric bike, electrically assisted bike, eab, battery, electric bike motor\u2026 It was more out of curiosity than anything else because I thought the investment was too big. But what I imagined to be a whole machine was in fact just a wheel connected to a battery, adaptable to most mountain or hybrid bikes. Not heading for the ROC D’AZUR, I opted for a hybrid bike that cost me \u20ac350, plus \u20ac833 for an electric conversion kit with a 60 v battery in a group buy at Power e-bike.<\/p>\n
At first, I was a bit lost because there is a minimum to know technically to install the thing and above all get it running. A few subtle manipulations avoid what I experienced, i.e. a battery not sending energy to the wheel. After the primal howl, I called customer support where I was kindly and patiently coached. Not being handy, I therefore had some difficulties getting started, in every sense of the term, but once going I had a blast.<\/p>\n
First, there was the surprise of the device’s power. I pushed the throttle and I shot off like a bullet. It was marked \u00ab\u00a0up to 50 km\u00a0\u00bb of range. I did not go that far but I easily chained 25-30 km without sweating, handy when you use your bike to go to work. Nicer for the office colleagues too\u2026 I even had fun not pedalling (not recommended for battery longevity) for five or six km uphill. Between the cycle and the Solex, I made a sensation among the cars that had some trouble overtaking me!<\/p>\n
Over for me: car hassles at rush hours. I am on an electric bike, I go everywhere and can even leave it in the hall of my workplace. Imagine that I tried the same with my car or my scooter! You just have to be careful not to leave the machine too exposed to the cold if you do not want to see the battery empty at lightning speed. To be safe, I charge it every time between uses. Perhaps that is too much but in seven months and regular use, my battery still works as well as ever.
