Its use on public roads is now governed by a set of legislative and regulatory provisions.<\/span><\/h1>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,serif\">The EAB, although it is fitted with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.power-e-bike.fr\/fr\/kit-de-conversion-velo-electrique\">electric motor<\/a>, is now part of the cycles, without the definition of this category having been modified. That is to say, the law treats the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial,serif\"><b>electric bike<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial,serif\"> like a conventional bike, provided certain criteria are met, namely: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,serif\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial,serif\"><b>electric motor<\/b><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial,serif\"> must operate with the pedalling;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,serif\">The motor power must not exceed 0.25 kilowatt;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,serif\">The power supply to the EAB must cut out above a speed of 25 km\/h or when pedalling stops.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,serif\"><b>The road rules applicable to EABs<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,serif\">As for all cycles, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.power-e-bike.fr\/fr\/velo-electrique\"><i>electric bike<\/i><\/a> may (and must) be ridden on the lanes and cycle paths. Also, wearing a protective helmet, the control marking and insurance are not compulsory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjNzZXFv972AhVwgs4BHcEIDygQFnoECAMQAQ&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.preventionroutiere.asso.fr%2F2018%2F05%2F02%2Fle-velo-a-assistance-electrique-2%2F&amp;usg=AOvVaw1QLsHTpmuCqvJxocdZF69o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,serif\"><b>The Highway Code for EABs<\/b><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,serif\">To avoid accidents and guarantee the safety of the cyclist and of the other road users, certain road rules must be observed. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,serif\">On an EAB, you must keep to the right so as not to hinder other road users.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,serif\">A group of cyclists may ride two abreast on routes and cycle paths provided they do not hinder traffic. Groups must not exceed 10 cyclists.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,serif\">Children under 8 years of age are allowed to ride <u>electric bikes<\/u> on pavements. All the others must hold their bikes in their hands. Otherwise they will be penalised.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,serif\">A cyclist who, while pedalling on a public road, holds their mobile phone in their hand will be fined 22 euros.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,serif\">A cyclist testing positive in a breathalyser check will be fined 90 euros.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The electric-assist bike (EAB) has recently been introduced into the French Highway Code.
