Sharing the road with drivers can nevertheless be difficult and sometimes dangerous.

Why tensions arise

Several factors can cause tension between cyclists and drivers:

Different speeds and paths : bicycles are generally slower than cars and their paths can be less predictable. This can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts.

Failure to follow traffic rules : cyclists and drivers do not always follow the rules, which can lead to crashes.

Lack of communication : cyclists and drivers do not always communicate, creating dangerous situations.

How can we share the road better?

Cyclists and drivers can take several steps to improve coexistence:

Follow traffic rules : this is the foundation of road safety. Cyclists must observe red lights, stop signs and traffic directions. Drivers must also respect cyclists and leave enough room for stopping or changing direction.

Pay attention to others : both cyclists and drivers should watch for one another. Look around before changing direction or manoeuvring.

Communicate : when cycling, make your intentions visible and use compliant lighting. In France, at night or in poor visibility, a white or yellow front light and a red rear light are required; the rear light must be steady. Amber direction indicators permitted since the decree of 27 November 2024 are optional. Drivers should use their turn indicators.

Infrastructure that helps people share the road

Public authorities also have a role. They can:

Develop cycling infrastructure : cycle tracks separated from the roadway can make bicycle journeys safer.

Reduce the space occupied by cars : limiting space for cars can encourage walking and cycling.

Conclusion

Sharing the road requires everyone’s involvement. Following traffic rules, paying attention and communicating can make urban journeys safer and more pleasant.

References checked on 8 October 2026

Service Public — bicycle equipment

Légifrance — decree of 27 November 2024

Sharing city roads better: attention, communication, infrastructure and bicycle lighting under French rules.

[199

post-26907","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-a-decouvrir-en
["GET
