Learn more about electric bike kits

The electric bike market keeps growing, with a dramatic rise in the number of people who have become fans in recent years. At the same time, electric bike conversion kits have appeared, making it possible to convert a conventional bike into a pedal-assist bike in a very short time and without needing to consult a specialist. Thanks to these kits, you can enjoy your mountain bike with more powerful features. But what should you know about the electric bike kit?

What is an electric bike kit?

An electric bike kit is a motor that is fitted to a conventional bike to convert it into an electric bike. That is why they are also called electric bike conversion kits.

With these devices, you get the benefits of having an electric bike in a more economical way.

Electric bike conversion kits consist of 4 parts:

• the motor
• the battery
• the controller
• the throttle

There are more complex kits on the market that can integrate a navigator, a throttle and a small computer.

Buying an electric bike kit

Buying a conversion kit can offer certain advantages over buying an electric bike:

• The price: buying an electric bike kit represents a considerable saving compared with the prices of electric bikes.
• The pleasure of DIY and doing it yourself: installing the kit promises a fun challenge and the satisfaction of completing a task without the help of a professional.
• Keeping a conventional bike you love: in a short time it becomes an electric bike while keeping its looks.
• The kit’s versatility: you can detach the kit and attach it to another bike, giving it a new lease of life.

What to consider when choosing between electric bike kits

Here are a few points to consider when choosing your conversion kit:

• The route: you need to know the characteristics of the route you will ride daily and the number of kilometres to cover, since buying a kit with more or less range depends on it. Standard kits offer a range of 15 to 25 km, enough to get around a city. Electric motors for MTBs reach up to 40 km.
• Power: if you only need a little help at specific moments of your ride, a standard kit will be enough. If you need more force to climb steep hills, you will have to buy a higher-power kit.
• The brand: the difference between brands makes a big difference in price. As with any product, a more prestigious brand guarantees full coverage, but with the drawback that your budget can skyrocket.
• The motor: there are 2 types of motors for electric bike kits on the market. On the one hand, you have the wheel motor (front or rear) and on the other hand the crank or central motor. The main difference between the two lies in power and comfort. A central motor offers great power compared with a wheel motor. It also provides better riding comfort and better weight balance.
• Technological functionality: some more complete electric bike kits integrate screens to be fitted on your bike’s handlebars. These display information such as battery status, speed and distance travelled. They are very useful on long trips because they let you know the state of your kit and battery.
