The Electric Fat Bike: Off-Road Adventure Reinvented

07/10/2026I own a Nakamura e-cliff 700 e-MTB (electric mountain bike) bought new for 1,000 euros. I use it a lot but I admit I am careful about the routes I take: if there are very steep climbs, I know I will have to pedal hard, despite the assistance. Yes! We live in a paradise-like region that is far from flat…
That is why I gave up some rides in the middle mountains or in my lovely Var forests.
Last Saturday, a friend offered to let me try his electric mountain bike equipped with a kit bought from Power-e-bike. He promised me that, even on vertical slopes, his electric bike would climb on its own (well, he always exaggerates a little, but I trusted him).
So I decided to “ride down to the Siagne”.
It means racing down a valley at the bottom of which flows this beautiful river with turquoise-green water. Then, of course, you have to climb back up: about 3 km on a badly damaged road, where there are more potholes than tarmac, and it is very steep the whole way.
I did not switch on the electric assistance on the way down. I experienced my first twist of the throttle “at the bottom” on a short but impressive slope by the river… A real helping hand! As if a giant’s hand had discreetly come to push me.
For the ride back, I had mentally prepared myself for a considerable effort. I did pedal: as if I were on flat ground with a conventional bike! All the way to the top! And I thought I had set the assist to maximum, but I had misread the screen: I was at 4/5 of the power…
My electric bike is enough for my city trips with moderate climbs, but if I want to go on “real” rides and see some relief, I will often have to steal my friend’s bike… or buy a kit!
Lilie, sporty but not too much!
