Maintenance of an electric bike (EAB) battery in winter
For a new bike, the electric bike battery must undergo on average 2 to 3 complete charge-discharge cycles, in order to make full use of its capacity. Indeed, any sudden and deep discharge must be avoided, as it can cause irreversible damage to the battery cells.
If you do not use your e-bike for a fairly long period, you must still charge the battery at least once every 2 months.
Be careful not to charge the battery of your electric bike in full sun or next to a heat source. Your battery must also not be charged in negative temperature. In fact, it is better to charge it in a dry, well-ventilated place with a temperature between 15 and 30°C.
If you plan to use your EAB in extreme conditions such as rain, snow or low temperatures, you must protect the battery of your electric bike by:
– regularly recharging the battery
– protecting the battery from moisture and cold
– favouring speed levels 1 or 2 and increasing the pedalling rate on climbs
– using the electric bike in favourable weather conditions
– keeping the battery in a heated room between 15 and 25°
Recharging the battery during winter
Not using the electric bike is the main cause of battery failure. Indeed, the battery discharges and deteriorates, and it must not be left discharged for a long time.
If you do not use your electric bike during winter, the battery capacity gradually decreases due to the climatic stresses (cold and moisture) it undergoes. Indeed, the cells slowly discharge while the electronic device integrated in the batteries (BMS: Battery Manager System) keeps consuming. It is the BMS that ensures protection against relatively high currents as well as against over- and under-voltage.
How to charge an electric bike battery?
Follow these few instructions to ensure good performance of your electric bike battery:
- Remove the charger as soon as the battery is charged to ensure its longevity
- Recharge your battery every 3 months for half an hour (if the bike is not used)
- Remove the battery if you do not plan to use your bike for a long period
- Recharge your battery as soon as it is discharged
Note that a poorly maintained battery can cause balancing problems or generate poor power supply for your electric motorisation kit!
