Tips for maintaining your electric bike battery
07/10/2026The battery for your Power-e-bike electric bike kit, for dummies
07/10/2026For the average user, it is hard to understand the differences and the importance of certain parameters concerning the batteries of electrically assisted bikes (EABs), but also for any other device using this technology.
Trying to be simple and not scientific at all :
- A vehicle with a combustion engine will use fuel that may be “super”, “unleaded”, “gas-oil”, etc. For an electrically assisted bike (EAB), to differentiate the “fuel” we will speak in volts (V) of battery “12V”, “24V” or “36V”, etc.
- In terms of capacity (or content) for combustion engines we express it in “litres” that can be contained in a fuel tank. For the battery of an electrically assisted bike (EAB) we express it in ampere per hour (Ah).
OK you will say, but for the use of my electrically assisted bike (EAB) how do I make my choice?
Two notions to know:
- The higher the voltage in volts (V) of the battery installed on your electrically assisted bike (EAB), the more torque and therefore power you have to climb hills.
- The more amperes/hour (A/h) your battery delivers, the more range you have, and therefore you can travel more kilometres (km) with your electrically assisted bike (EAB).
But that is not all. Your choice to equip your electrically assisted bike (EAB) will have to be made among several battery technologies having their advantages and disadvantages. Among these we can mention:
- Lead batteries (Pb)
- Nickel Cadmium batteries (Ni-Cd)
- Nickel Metal Hydride batteries (NiMH)
- Lithium Ion batteries (Li-Ion)
- Lithium Ion Polymer batteries (LiPo)
