Different types of cargo bikes
The cargo bike world splits into three main categories, each suited to specific uses: the two-wheeled front-loader, the three-wheeled triporteur, and the longtail.
The front-loader (biporteur)
This long-wheelbase two-wheeler is set apart by a loading area at the front. Handling stays good, and a secure box can carry two or three children. Its length — often over 2.50 m — can, however, make parking tricky in tight urban spaces.
The triporteur
Built on three wheels with a front load box, the triporteur stands out for its high stability. It is ideal for heavy or bulky loads, with a capacity reaching 100 kg on certain models. It comes in a rigid or tilting version, the latter letting the front wheels lean into corners for better handling.
The longtail
Looking like a classic bike with an extended rear rack, the longtail strikes a good balance between compactness and load capacity. More agile than the other models, it can seat one or two children on secure seats. Its capacity for bulky objects is, however, more limited.
The advantages of a cargo bike
The growing success of the cargo bike comes down to many strong points:
Eco-friendly and economical
With no direct CO₂ emissions, the cargo bike significantly shrinks your carbon footprint. It also avoids the fuel and parking costs tied to car use, a substantial long-term saving.
Practical in the city
Thanks to its agility, a cargo bike weaves through dense city-centre traffic more easily. It also finds parking far more readily than a car — a real advantage where urban space is scarce.
Versatile
The cargo bike adapts to many daily uses: carrying children, shopping, goods deliveries, even light house-moves. This versatility makes it a precious car-replacement tool in many situations.
Good for your health
Regular use of a cargo bike means daily physical activity, improving cardiovascular health and overall well-being.
The electric cargo bike: an extra edge
The electric version of the cargo bike is booming, and for good reason. Electric assist offsets the vehicle’s considerable weight (between 30 and 55 kg) and makes carrying heavy loads easier — up to 200 kg on certain models.
The electric motors, often from renowned brands such as Bosch or Shimano, provide pedal assist up to 25 km/h, in line with European regulations. Range generally varies between 50 and 100 km depending on the model and riding conditions.
The electric cargo bike therefore makes this transport mode accessible to a wider public, including less sporty riders or those living in hilly areas. It also makes longer or more frequent trips possible without excessive effort.
What to weigh up before buying
Despite its many benefits, the cargo bike does come with a few constraints to consider:
Price
An electric cargo bike generally costs between €3,500 and €4,500, with premium models reaching €9,500. That said, more and more local authorities offer purchase grants, making the investment easier on the wallet.
Bulk
Depending on the model, parking can prove awkward, especially for front-loaders and triporteurs. Make sure you have suitable storage space at home and at work.
Learning curve
Riding a cargo bike, especially loaded, takes some adapting. Practise in a safe area before joining traffic.
Safety
Proper equipment (helmet, reflective vest) and obeying the rules of the road are crucial. On bikes with more than two wheels, riding side by side is in particular not allowed.
Conclusion
The cargo bike is an innovative, sustainable urban transport solution that fits perfectly with the soft-mobility trend. Its rise shows mindsets shifting toward more environmentally respectful ways of getting around. With the steady expansion of cycling infrastructure and the financial incentives offered by many local authorities, the cargo bike has a bright future in meeting the urban mobility challenges of the 21st century.
