06/11/2025Commuting by electric bike: a new approach to everyday travel
Commuting to work by electric bike is more than a trend. It is a change of lifestyle attracting more and more city dwellers.
Combining comfort, environmental considerations and savings, the electric-assist bicycle changes the way we think about everyday journeys.
Here is why you might seriously consider giving it a try.

1. Leave traffic jams behind
The main advantage of an electric bike in the city? smoother travel. A suitable cycling route can help you avoid some traffic jams and provide an alternative to public transport. An e-bike lets you choose other routes, sometimes shorter or more enjoyable. Respect other road users and signs; journey times depend on the route, conditions and parking.
🚲 ADEME highlights the potential for cycling to replace short journeys currently made by car. For your commute, compare the actual routes and door-to-door travel times.

2. An economical way to travel
An electric bike offers real opportunities to save. It avoids buying fuel for that journey and can reduce some parking or car-use costs. However, you need to account for buying or renting the bicycle, maintenance, electricity and any accessories. Some employers support this approach:
- France’s sustainable mobility allowance : optional support in the French private sector, according to the employer’s agreement or decision; there is no guaranteed allowance of €500 for every employee
- Possible support for renting or buying an e-bike, depending on the schemes offered
- Secure bicycle parking at work
💡 Savings vary with the kilometres replaced and the costs of the bicycle and car. Calculate your actual budget: annual savings of €2,000 are not guaranteed.

3. Benefits for health and the environment
Even with electrical assistance, pedalling is a way to include physical activity in your journeys. Regular activity suited to your circumstances can contribute to physical fitness and well-being. Effects depend on the individual and their activity; this is not a promise of better sleep.
For the environment, replacing some car journeys offers several advantages:
- No exhaust emissions during the journey; an overall carbon footprint that still needs to be considered
- Less noise pollution
- A vehicle lighter than a car
🌍 An e-bike’s carbon footprint includes its manufacture and the electricity used. The effect of changing a journey depends on distances, the transport mode replaced and use: the figure of 660 kg per year in the previous version did not come with a verifiable calculation method.

4. A different way to start the day
Starting the day with a short bike ride can be a way to recharge mentally. For some people, this journey is a pleasant break before work. It cannot guarantee greater concentration or creativity, or the prevention of burnout.
💼 It is useful to try the route and discuss it with employees to assess comfort, the time needed and practical requirements. General promises of punctuality, less illness or greater motivation are not established here.
5. Support for employers too
Encouraging cycle commuting can also be beneficial for the company. Besides saving parking space, a company may benefit from:
- A French corporation tax reduction, subject to conditions, for providing employees with a free fleet of bicycles for journeys between home and work
- A stronger corporate social responsibility profile
- An approach to quality of working life, to be assessed with employees
Conclusion: a solution to adapt to your needs
An electric bike is more than a means of transport: it is a commitment to more active everyday mobility. Whether you are an employee or a company manager, assess the route, safety, budget and schemes actually available: cycle commuting can be an interesting option, without suiting every situation in the same way.
