How to care for an electric bicycle battery
An electric bicycle needs appropriate maintenance. Battery care helps preserve performance, but the battery and charger instructions for your particular model always take priority.
Using and storing the battery
- Check that the charge level is sufficient before a long ride.
- Range depends on assistance level, speed and the route. Use an appropriate gear and assistance setting; a general instruction to avoid pedalling hard is not a battery-care rule.
- Protect the battery from excessive heat, extreme cold and moisture. Follow its specified operating and storage conditions.
- Check the battery, connections and charger. If there is damage or an abnormal condition, stop using it and consult the supplier.
Battery life varies with the model, use and storage. Care can reduce avoidable deterioration, but does not restore a worn battery to its original capacity.
Charging the battery
- Use the charger specified or expressly approved by the battery manufacturer, with the correct voltage and connections.
- Do not deliberately run the battery flat. You do not have to wait for 5 or 10% charge before recharging; follow the model’s instructions.
- Charging time depends on the battery and charger. A universal 24-hour limit is not appropriate: follow the stated charging time and disconnect when charging is complete. If charging does not finish normally, stop and consult the supplier.
- Charge in a dry, suitable place, within the temperature range in the instructions. Do not apply one 15–30°C range to every battery.
Power E-Bike’s catalogue includes batteries for conversion kits. Have compatibility with your kit and charger confirmed before choosing one.
