06/10/2026The 5 things to know before choosing an electric bike
The electric-assist bike has been a great success for a few years now and many people have decided to convert their classic bike into an electric bike.
What do you need to know before converting your bicycle into an electric-assist bike?
The performance of an electric bike depends on the bike model and the chosen conversion kit.
What should be taken into consideration before converting your bike into an electric bike?
- Use / usefulness: the electric bike suits the urban environment and is therefore perfect for commuting, going for a ride, doing the shopping, going to the cinema or a restaurant, or carrying loads. What is more, craftsmen, pizza delivery riders and shopkeepers increasingly travel by electric bike.
- Speed: e-bikes go faster than classic bikes but require regular pedalling. The maximum speed of an electric-assist bike is set at 25 km/h and the average speed is 19 km/h.
- Battery range: the battery of a new electric bike must undergo on average 2 to 3 complete charge-discharge cycles to reach its full capacity. Some batteries can guarantee a range of 120 km provided the rider’s weight does not exceed 75 kg and only 25% of the electric assistance is used. The range is an average: it varies according to the rider, the weather, the difficulty of the route and the type of bike.
- Price: an electric bike is relatively expensive; it ranges from €900 to €3,000. Conversion and motorisation kits are not that expensive. What is more, Power E-Bike guarantees the lowest prices in France and offers kits compatible with various batteries requiring no modification (36V, 48V and 60V).
- Whether or not you are used to cycling: before buying an electric bike you must be sure that you are able to pedal. Indeed, an electric-assist bike only starts when pedalling and as soon as the rider stops pedalling, the bike stops.
