The electric bike or electric-assist bike (e-bike) is a bicycle fitted with a rechargeable battery and an auxiliary motor. The electric assistance multiplies the energy produced by pedalling, giving the rider comfort and ease of riding. Suited to all kinds of terrain, the e-bike is a very popular everyday means of transport.

In an urban context, the average speed is 18 km/h for a car, 17 km/h for a bus, 15 km/h for a classic bike and 19 km/h for an electric bike. The e-bike is therefore the fastest mode of transport in town, except for the scooter or motorbike with an average speed of 20 km/h.

The electric bike uses 1 kWh for a 100 km trip, i.e. €0.1. Fully recharging the battery of an electric bike, with a 60 km range, costs about 4 euro cents.

However, this type of two-wheeler requires less effort thanks to the electric assistance that boosts pedalling. Riding an e-bike is ideal as a moderate physical activity since it demands less cardiac and muscular effort. It allows elderly or reduced-mobility people to exercise gently. The e-bike also lets a rider cycle and cover long journeys without violent physical effort.
