Does the electric bike have a place in daily journeys?

07/10/2026Bike conversion: between received ideas and real information
Electric bikes are invading our streets and taking up more and more room in our daily journeys.
Before buying an electrically assisted bike, it is worth reviewing a few received ideas that could be wrong and answering several questions.
Are you obliged to pedal when riding an electric bike?
Some people imagine that an electric bike spares them pedalling, whereas that is not the case.
To set your electrically assisted bike in motion, you must pedal. As soon as you stop doing so, the bike stops. The assistance simply supports your pedalling so that you go faster.
Can an electric bike travel as fast as a motorbike?
It should be known that the top speed of a traditional electric bike is limited to 25 km/h, and the motor only helps the cyclist reach that speed.
Consequently, the conventional EAB cannot go faster than a motorbike… well, almost.
Indeed, some Power-e-bike customers very nearly managed it thanks to the conversion kit!
But we will not talk about that here, since it takes us outside the field of the electrically assisted bike.
An electric bike needs neither registration nor insurance
An electrically assisted bike requires neither registration nor insurance, and even a helmet is not compulsory, though strongly recommended by most authorities in the various European countries.
Does the conversion and motorisation kit make the bike too heavy?
The conversion kit certainly makes the bike heavier, but the weight remains manageable because it is well distributed over the whole bike. Moreover, thanks to new technologies, the weight of motors and batteries has steadily decreased compared with the first generations.
It should be noted that the electrically assisted bike (EAB) is now an economical and efficient means of transport, especially for urban journeys.
