Historical Electric Bike Selection — Archive

Electric assistance can make longer journeys or journeys with less effort easier. Some cyclists hesitate to change bikes because of cost or because they like their existing hybrid, mountain, city or gravel bike. This is where an electric bicycle conversion kit can be useful: it allows you to consider converting an ordinary bicycle, subject to compatibility, safety and conformity of the complete vehicle.
However, kits differ and not every bike is a suitable candidate. Front or rear hub motors, mid-drives, battery capacities, brake compatibility, sensors, legislation and component quality all matter. This guide explains what a conversion kit is, how to choose one, how installation works, what the regulations say and how to avoid mistakes that can be costly.
What is an electric bicycle conversion kit?
An electric bicycle kit (or conversion kit) is a set of components that adds electric assistance to an ordinary bicycle. The aim is for the motor to help the rider pedal, particularly when starting, climbing or travelling farther. You retain the feel of cycling with an adjustable helping hand.
Most kits include:
- A motor (in a wheel or at the bottom bracket);
- A battery (often removable);
- A controller (power and safety management);
- A pedalling sensor (PAS) or a torque sensor (feel depends on the system and settings);
- A display/control unit on the handlebar (assistance level, speed, range and other information).
Some kits offer options such as battery-powered lights, connectivity, anti-theft features or energy-management modes.
Why convert instead of buying a complete e-bike?
A kit can be a useful compromise if the base bicycle is sound and suitable:
- Budget : conversion may cost less than a complete e-bike depending on equipment, bike condition and labour; compare total costs.
- Keep a bike you like : riding position, frame, accessories and familiar habits remain.
- Customisation : choose motor type, battery range requirements and control style.
- Possible upgrades : some batteries, controls or parts can be upgraded or transferred only when compatibility is confirmed.
- Repair options : some components can be replaced separately, depending on the build; ease depends on parts and access.
The main limitation is that the base bike was not originally designed for electric assistance. Compatibility and installation quality are therefore decisive.
Hub motor or mid-drive: which to choose?
The choice depends on bicycle, route, load and system characteristics. These are the main differences:
Front hub motor
The motor is built into the front hub. Fitting may be accessible, but fork, dropouts, brakes and fastening must be suitable and checked.
- Advantages : fitting may be simpler and cost lower; suitability for town or hills depends on motor and bike.
- Limitations : traction may be limited on slippery ground depending on load distribution and tyres; check fork strength and stresses too.
Rear hub motor
The motor is in the rear hub. Weight distribution may aid traction in some cases, without universally guaranteeing stability or grip.
- Advantages : feel and traction may suit some urban or track use, depending on build and terrain.
- Limitations : check cassette or freewheel, brakes, dropout spacing and wheel installation. A hub motor does not necessarily drive the chain like a mid-drive.
Mid-drive motor
This motor uses the bicycle drivetrain. Suitable gears can help on hills; smoothness and efficiency also depend on sensors, settings and conditions.
- Advantages : use of gears and mass near the bike’s centre; results depend on the configuration.
- Limitations : bottom-bracket compatibility, chain and sprocket servicing, and system-specific cost comparison are needed.
Battery range and common mistakes
Range in kilometres depends on rider weight, wind, hills, tyre pressure, temperature, assistance and motor characteristics. To compare available energy, look at capacity in Wh (watt-hours).
A larger suitable battery can provide:
- more reserve to avoid running empty;
- more margin for unexpected trips;
- lifespan also depends on cells, temperature, management and charging instructions; high capacity does not guarantee longevity.
Common mistake: choosing the smallest pack and having to manage range constantly. A little reserve can help with regular use.
Compatibility checks before buying
Before ordering, check these points carefully:
- Wheel size (26″, 27.5″, 28″, 29″, 700c…): the motor wheel must match the required format.
- Brakes : rim or disc; for discs, check mounts and hub compatibility.
- Dropout spacing : check front and rear spacing, dropout shape and axle type.
- Drivetrain : freewheel or cassette and number of gears.
- Frame : battery position at bottle mounts, rack or frame triangle.
- Use : city, tracks, long rides and loads such as bags or child seats.
The base bike must be in good condition: effective brakes, suitable tyres, sound wheels and a maintained drivetrain. Electric assistance cannot remedy a worn-out bicycle.
Installation steps and time requirements
Installation time depends on the kit and configuration:
- Hub-motor kit : the original guide suggested 1 to 2 hours; this is an unguaranteed estimate that depends strongly on bike, tools and skills.
- Mid-drive kit : the original guide suggested 2 to 4 hours; removal, compatibility, adjustments and checks can take longer.
Typical stages include:
- replace the wheel for a hub motor or fit the mid-drive;
- secure the battery and route cables neatly;
- fit the pedalling or torque sensor;
- fit the display or control unit;
- check operation, settings, fastenings, cables and brakes according to the manual; have the installation inspected by a competent person.
Tip: route and protect cables carefully to limit rubbing and damage. A neat appearance does not replace mechanical and electrical checks.
French legal requirements
In France, the electrically assisted cycle category requires, among other conditions, an auxiliary motor with maximum continuous rated power of 250 W, power progressively reduced and cut off at 25 km/h, and cut-off when the rider stops pedalling. A vehicle outside this definition may fall into another category, including mopeds, with approval, insurance and registration requirements to check.
Important: a kit advertised as compliant does not itself certify the converted bicycle. Check the complete configuration, documents and controls; an independent throttle can change the vehicle category.
Maintenance and safety
- Braking : weight and installation conditions require suitable, sound and checked brakes.
- Tyre pressure : follow tyre and bicycle manufacturers’ values; range and handling also depend on other factors.
- Chain and drivetrain : clean and lubricate regularly, particularly with a mid-drive, following the component instructions.
- Battery : follow pack and charger manuals for charging and storage; do not leave a depleted battery at 0% for a long time, and check the model’s storage conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Can any bicycle be converted?
Not every bicycle can be converted safely. Check condition and compatibility of frame, fork, wheels, brakes and drivetrain, and the kit’s requirements. An old, fragile or damaged bicycle needs competent assessment; a robust appearance is not proof of compatibility.
Which kit for city riding?
A front or rear hub motor may suit some urban trips with a compatible battery matched to distance. Check hills, load, braking and maintenance too; it is not a universal choice.
Which kit for hills?
A mid-drive can use gears on climbs, but a properly sized hub motor can also work. Compare torque, gearing, climbing speed, load and thermal limits rather than judging by motor position alone.
Conclusion: choose a kit for the complete bicycle
A kit can improve comfort and let you keep a bicycle you enjoy. Choice depends on route, hills, load, bike condition and motor-battery-control system. Checking compatibility, following instructions and having the installation inspected help achieve a suitable conversion. Reliability, lifespan and permission for public-road use are not guaranteed simply by buying a kit.
