E-bike performance
Electrically assisted bikes (EABs) are designed to assist riders up to 25 km/h, the point where the electric assistance switches off. Nevertheless, many modern e-bikes, especially high-end or speed-oriented models, can easily exceed that limit. Some even reach 30, 35 or even 45 km/h, offering performance far above the regulatory standard.
Comparison with other means of transport
The current regulation seems outdated compared with the performance of other means of transport. For example, traditional racing bikes and even some inline skates can easily exceed 25 km/h, sometimes reaching 40 km/h or more. In this context, the specific restriction imposed on e-bikes can seem disproportionate, while other unassisted means of transport show similar or even higher performance.
Road safety and adapting the rules
Road user safety remains an absolute priority, and the e-bike speed limit aims to reduce the risk of accidents. However, it would be opportune to revise and adapt these rules to take account of technological advances and the current performance of e-bikes. Updating the standards could allow for more coherent and safer rules, while taking account of the evolution of vehicles on public roads.
Conclusion
The 25 km/h speed limit for e-bikes was introduced for safety reasons, but currently seems obsolete given technological progress and the performance of modern e-bikes. It may be time to reassess these limits in order to strike a balance between road user safety and the evolution of electric transport, considering the performance comparable to other vehicles not subject to these restrictions. A broader reflection on e-bike regulation is needed to adapt to the new realities of urban mobility.
