The electric bike kit, here is the solution

07/10/2026I went for a hub-motor electric bike kit because for 3 years I had used another electric bike, a homemade one, with a rear hub motor, which I was fully satisfied with (commuting use, 15 km per day in total).
Having worn out my old Bafang motor (after 6,000 km all the same), or more precisely having broken the freewheel built into the motor, and because of other technical problems, I decided to change everything.
Note that I mainly use the thumb throttle (moped mode).
I hesitated for a long time about taking a kit with a Bafang BBS mid motor, but I could hardly see myself changing gears every 20 m for urban use (frequent stops and restarts).
That is why a hub motor perfectly meets my needs.
Finally, knowing that some Bafang electric motors are fragile as far as the built-in freewheel is concerned (in intensive use with the thumb throttle), and possibly the helical gear system which has to be changed after a while, I finally opted for a direct-drive motor.
The electric bike kits offered by Power-E-Bike definitely settled my choice.
Today, the electric bike is a necessity for me, a need, and I could no longer do without it to go to work (the time saving compared with a car or public transport journey is significant).
Integration:
The assembly was done very easily, very quickly. In 2 hours my bike was up and running.
The wheel slipped into the frame without difficulty. I was just a bit slow to understand how the cables had to be connected.
Later on, I took extra time to finalise the whole thing (waterproofing of the LCD display, final fixing of the wiring, adjusting the position of the accessories on the handlebars, etc.).
Advantages of the power-e-bike electric bike kit;
– The very competitive price for the kit offered.
– A French company and therefore reduced shipping costs compared with an import. Shipment and receipt of the kit very fast.
– Choice of motor: The Nine-Continent direct-drive motors have the reputation of being reliable and solid, even unbreakable. Powerful and quiet motor (quieter than the one I had before).
– The versatility of the controller (I took the 28A one) which supports batteries from 36V to 60V, without changing anything.
– The LCD display can also be set according to voltage (36V, 48V, 60V).
– The apparent quality of the whole set (motor, controller, LCD).
Other remarks;
I list a few remarks that came to mind when comparing with my old Bafang BPM electric bike kit.
– The wiring seems a bit fragile and there are many wires. Not easy to find your way around for a novice. It is not insurmountable for all that. You should consult the online documentation on the power-e-bike website.
– The controller, the cables and the LCD display are not equipped with a waterproof system. I make this remark because I naturally compare with my old kit which was completely waterproof. The cables were grouped and wrapped in robust sleeves fitted with marine connectors.
– The size of the 9C motor: Less discreet than a Bafang BPM for example. But the 9C is quieter and should normally be more robust in the long run. The size difference lies in the design (direct-drive for the 9C or helical gearing for the Bafang).
Conclusion:
I am very satisfied with the kit.
I like the LCD display (optional but I recommend it): The display is backlit and multi-function: speed, instant power (shown as a bar), battery level (precise voltage display), total mileage and last trip mileage, assistance level.
No need to add a meter, the LCD display takes care of everything.
To ensure the waterproofing of the LCD display, I covered it with a soft, thick, transparent plastic cut out from a travel wallet (3 euros).
The controller, the cables, etc. are placed in the rear panniers, themselves protected by a cover in case of rain.
The motor is powerful (7×9 winding). I can compare with my old Bafang BPM1 (36V500W model + 750W controller + 44V battery). Using the same 44V battery, the 9C is certainly a little less violent at start-up. It is smoother and reaches a slightly lower top speed (about -10%). But that also depends on the winding. I did not choose the fastest one at 7×9.
Overall, the 9C does its job very well and delivers very good performance.
